CHAPTER Four

A Great Victory

Even with his men outnumbered and hungry, Burgoyne thought he could take on the Americans at Bemis Heights.

He knew he couldn’t retreat without risking being caught by the larger American force. He also could not establish a new, secure way to get supplies from Canada. He hoped that Clinton would arrive soon with reinforcements, and together they could still take Albany.

At Bemis Heights on the morning of October 7, Gates sent Colonel James Wilkinson to scout the situation. From the woods around the heights, Wilkinson could see British troops harvesting wheat to make bread. Wilkinson also noticed several generals looking through their spyglasses. But from that distance, he couldn’t tell if Burgoyne was one of them.

Wilkinson returned to camp and reported his findings to Gates, who prepared some of his men to meet the British. Around noon Gates heard gunfire nearby. The second Battle of Saratoga had begun.
